Lewis Hamilton heads Goodwood Festival of Speed line up

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is to be the star attraction at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Event founder Lord March revealed that Hamilton has agreed to attend and will drive a car once raced by his boyhood hero Ayrton Senna.

The young Brit hero attracted huge crowds to the event last year - and organisers hope he will have even greater pulling power now that he is the reigning world champion.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that fellow F1 star Jenson Button will be at the festival near Chichester in the latest Brawn GP machine - and triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart will also get behind the wheel.

Among the famous faces at yesterday's festival media launch at Goodwood were 1996 Formula One world champion Damon Hill, Le Mans legend Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass.

Rallying greats Rauno Aaltonen and Russell Brookes provided sideways action on the Goodwood forest rally stage and supermodel Jodie Kidd and car fan Maxi Jazz from the rock band Faithless were also there.

The theme of this year's festival, which takes place from July 3-5, is True Grit Epic Feats of Endurance. This will celebrate the drive and determination of motor racing's heroes, who overcame huge physical, mental and mechanical barriers in their quest for glory.

Motor racing legends and modern day stars are expected to join together to take on the famous 1.16-mile hillclimb, using some of the world's finest competition cars and motorcycles.

In action on two wheels and four will be everything from early Edwardian racers to today's hi-tech F1 cars.

The festival will also be marking the centenaries of Bugatti, Audi and Morgan, 50 years of both Mini and the Daytona Speedway, 40 years since Jackie Stewart and Matra's dominance in motor sport, plus 60 continuous years of both the Motorcycle World Championship and the most famous endurance race of them all, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The festival is firmly established as the world's biggest celebration of the history of motorsport, with crowds topping 140,000 last year.

The festival's sister event, the Goodwood Revival, will be held from September 18-20. Special events this year will include a Mini-only race to celebrate the iconic little car's 50th anniversary and an 80th birthday party for racing legend Sir Stirling Moss. Admission to both events is strictly by advance ticket only. Go to goodwood.co.uk
